Monika Rogozinska, a journalist and mountaineer, has long been a behind-the scenes powerhouse for The Explorers Club. She co-founded the very successful Polish Chapter in 1993, and was honored with the Club's Sweeney Medal in 2013 in recognition of her dedicated service and ongoing commitment to promoting exploration.

She was also awarded the Club's Citation of Merit in 2004.

Born in Warsaw, Rogozinska earned an M.A. in Polish literature and cultural studies at Warsaw University. Unable to work as a journalist before 1989 because Poland had no free media at that time, she moved to a mountain hut in the remote Valley of Five Lakes in Tatras, the highest part of the Carpathian Range. There she became a volunteer member of the Mountain Rescue Service and worked as a Tatra Mountain Guide. As a mountaineer she has climbed in the Tatras and the Alps and hiked in the Andes. In 1980 during the Polish Mt Everest Expedition she climbed Ice Fall and entered Everest Camp. She was one of the first women from Europe to set foot in this place. She has organized expeditions and has taken part in the winter exploration of the Himalayas and Karakorum as a journalist for Rzeczpospolita, Poland’s most respected national daily newspaper. She was part of the first-ever winter expedition to K2 from the north side. In 2007, she carried the The Explorers Club flag on the Inca Oracles Expedition to Peru and Bolivia, a project for National Geographic Poland.Rogozinska has been an editor, author, co-author and consultant on several books and exhibitions and has given hundreds of lectures promoting exploration in Poland and abroad.

The evening will also feature a presentation from Tomasz Grzywaczewski – journalist, writer and PhD candidate at the Chair of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Lodz. His will speak on his work "Long Walk PLUS Expedition – across the wild East," a journalistic-adventure story tracking the heroes of legendary book “The Long Walk” by Slavomir Rawicz, which describes their breathtaking escape from a Soviet labour camp and their epic voyage to freedom from Siberia to India.
